Major Research topic:
Processing methodologies for big, complex and dynamic economic networks

Abstract:
My research, motivated by the interest of the Bank of Italy, focuses on the calculation of micro and macroeconomic indicators in company and economic networks; also, it focuses on the detection of economic phenomena. In particular, I am studying two optimization methodologies to be applied on the graph of the Italian companies for the efficient calculation of both the integrated ownership (the cumulated ownership of company shares) and the company control (the ability of companies and individuals to impose decisions on other companies) at any level of depth. These methodologies allow identifying companies playing some interesting roles (e.g. the ultimate beneficial owner or the ultimate controller) in a chain of control. Other important results, useful for the Bank of Italy, that are also part of my research will consist of analyzing the structure of the Italian market. A particular focus will be on the concentration/dispersion of company control and on the shock propagation in this kind of network. Studying the company network together with the transaction network new advanced anti-money laundering techniques (based on fraud pattern detection on complex networks) can be developed. All these research topics I’ll work on require to be studied with state-of-the-art technologies for Big Data as well as all the methodologies and techniques I’m going to develop; this is because they have to deal with large data that evolve very quickly over time.
